About Tanot Mata and Longewala
Tanot Mata's temple sits 120 km north-west of Jaisalmer and is run by the BSF, because in 1965 some three thousand Pakistani shells fell around it and not one exploded. Longewala, 40 km south, is where on the night of 4 December 1971 about 120 men of 23 Punjab under Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri held off a Pakistani armoured column until the Air Force arrived at dawn. The memorial keeps captured tanks. It is a long day on empty roads; carry water.
