About Taj Mahal
Shah Jahan built it between 1632 and 1653 as the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal, and no photograph prepares you for the scale of the marble up close. Go at opening time, when the light is soft and the crowds have not arrived. The ticket for the main mausoleum is separate and worth it. Closed Fridays, when only worshippers enter the mosque.
What to see and do
- The mausoleum and its pietra dura inlay
- Sunrise from the east gate
- The Yamuna-side view from Mehtab Bagh across the river
- The mosque and the jawab flanking the tomb
- Charbagh gardens and the reflecting pool
