About Patna Museum

The old museum, opened in 1917 in an Indo-Saracenic building everyone in Patna calls Jadu Ghar. Its prize is the relic casket dug out of the Vaishali stupa in 1958, holding what is believed to be a portion of the ashes of the Buddha, kept in a separate ticketed gallery. There is also a 200-million-year-old fossilised tree trunk and a large hall of Pala bronzes. Half the collection moved to Bihar Museum, so it is quieter now.
