About Golghar

Captain John Garstin built this beehive-shaped granary in 1786 after the 1770 famine, and it was never properly filled because the doors open inwards. It is 29 metres high with 145 steps spiralling up the outside, and the top gives the best view of the Ganga and Gandhi Maidan. The 72-foot bronze Gandhi across the road is the tallest statue of him anywhere.
