About Government Museum, Mathura
F. S. Growse, the district collector, started it in 1874 and it holds the largest collection of the Mathura school anywhere: red-spotted sandstone Buddhas, Jain tirthankaras, yakshis and Kushan royal portraits from the 1st to 6th centuries. The headless Kanishka from Mat is here. Labels are patchy but the sculpture carries itself. Closed Mondays.
