About Gokul and Mahavan
Across the Yamuna and 15 km from Mathura, the village where the infant Krishna was carried on the night of his birth. Gokul has the Raman Reti, a stretch of sand where people roll or walk barefoot, and the Vallabhacharya baithak. Mahavan next door has the Chaurasi Khamba, an 84-pillared hall said to be the house of Nand and in fact a much reworked early medieval building. Nandotsav, the morning after Janmashtami, is the big day here.
