About Buddha Relic Stupa
A low ring of brick under a shelter, easy to miss and the most important thing in Vaishali. Excavated by A. S. Altekar in 1958, it proved to be the stupa the Licchavis raised over their one-eighth share of the Buddha’s ashes, one of the original eight, and a soapstone casket of ash and fragments was found inside. The casket was held at Patna Museum for decades and now sits in the new Buddha Samyak Darshan Museum across the fields.
