About Tarkulha Devi Temple

A Devi shrine under a tarkul (palmyra) palm where Bandhu Singh, a local rebel of 1857, is said to have prayed before ambushing British parties in the forest; he was hanged in Gorakhpur in 1858 and is remembered here as a hero. The Chaitra fair runs for a month from Ram Navami. The temple is also known for goat sacrifice and a meat prasad cooked in earthen pots, which is unusual for a Devi shrine.
