About Chauri Chaura Shaheed Smarak
On 4 February 1922 a crowd of Non-Cooperation volunteers, fired on by police, burnt the thana here with 22 policemen inside, and Gandhi called off the movement in response. The memorial, a tall stone tower with the names of the 19 men hanged afterwards, stands beside the railway line about 25 km east of Gorakhpur. A small museum was added for the centenary in 2021.
