About Rohtasgarh Fort
One of the largest hill forts in India, on a spur of the Kaimur plateau 450 metres above the Son valley, with about 45 km of wall round the top. Sher Shah took it by a trick in 1539; Raja Man Singh, Akbar governor of Bihar, built the palace in 1597, and the Hathiya Pol, the Aina Mahal and the Rohitasan temple are what you walk through, roofless and enormous. About 1,500 steps climb from Akbarpur; a jeep track from Rehal reaches the top.
What to see and do
- Man Singh's palace and the Aina Mahal, 1597
