About Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi
Held to be the prison cell where Krishna was born, and the site has been pulled down and rebuilt many times, the last demolition under Aurangzeb in 1670, whose Shahi Idgah still stands against the compound wall. The present Keshav Dev temple and the garbha griha shrine were built between 1953 and 1982 with Birla and Dalmia money. Security is heavy, nothing electronic goes in, and Janmashtami here is the biggest night in Mathura.
