About Hemis Monastery

The largest and richest monastery of Ladakh, belonging to the Drukpa lineage, hidden in a side valley about 45 km from Leh. It is known for the Hemis festival, a masked dance held every year in June or July to honour Guru Padmasambhava, and has a museum with old thangkas and relics. The courtyards and prayer halls have fine murals. Visit early in the day.
