About Fort Aguada and Lighthouse

The best preserved Portuguese fort in Goa, built in 1612 to guard the Mandovi mouth against the Dutch and the Marathas. The name comes from the word for water, because a freshwater spring inside supplied passing ships. The upper fort carries an old four storey lighthouse dating from the 1860s, and the lower fort runs down to the sea. Go in the late afternoon when the laterite turns orange.
