About Valmiki Tiger Reserve
Bihar’s only tiger reserve, about 900 square kilometres of terai sal forest and grassland along the Nepal border, joined to Chitwan across the river; the 2022 count put the tigers in the fifties and rising. Jeep safaris run from Valmikinagar, and the Gandak barrage there is where the river leaves Nepal. It is far less crowded than the central Indian reserves and the forest is beautiful even on a day with no tiger. Closed in the monsoon.
