About Lauriya Nandangarh

An Ashokan pillar of polished sandstone with its lion capital still in place and six edicts cut into the shaft, standing in a field where it has stood since about 245 BCE, with a hole from a Mughal cannonball to show for it. Two kilometres away is Nandangarh, a brick stupa mound about 25 metres high and among the largest in India, first century BCE, and beyond it low earthen mounds that early excavators took for Vedic burials.
