About Shahi Bridge

Built between 1564 and 1568 by Munim Khan, governor under Akbar, to the design of the Afghan architect Afzal Ali, and still carrying traffic across the Gomti four centuries on. It has ten pointed arches with small chhatri pavilions on top, and a stone lion crushing an elephant at one end that everyone photographs. The 1934 earthquake knocked down several arches, since rebuilt in the same style. Best seen from the ghats below at dusk.
