About Ranakpur Jain Temple
Begun in 1439 by the merchant Dharna Shah on land given by Rana Kumbha, and the main Chaumukha temple stands on 1,444 carved marble pillars, none of which repeat. The light comes in from all sides through open courtyards, so the whole interior glows. Non-Jain visitors are admitted only from noon till five, which is worth planning around. Kumbhalgarh is an hour across the hills.
