About Martand Sun Temple

The ruins of a great Sun temple of the 8th century, built by King Lalitaditya of the Karkota dynasty on a plateau at Mattan. The wide colonnaded courtyard and the carved doorways show a mix of Gandhara, Gupta and Kashmiri styles. The site is large and open, with the valley and mountains as a setting, and is one of the most striking old monuments in Kashmir.
