About Mahaparinirvana Temple

Where the Buddha died, around 483 BCE, between two sal trees at Kushinara. The temple holds a 6.1 m reclining Buddha carved from a single block of Chunar sandstone in the 5th century, the gift of a monk named Haribala, found broken in 1876 and pieced together. Behind it stands the Nirvana Stupa. Pilgrims drape the statue in gold cloth and the atmosphere in the early morning is the best in Kushinagar.
