About Chunar Fort
A fort on a sandstone bluff over the Ganga that changed hands more than most: Babur, Sher Shah, Humayun, Akbar and finally Warren Hastings, who kept a house here. The Sonwa Mandap and a rock-cut tank are inside, and the view up and down the river is the point. Chunar sandstone built Sarnath and the Ashokan pillars, and the town still makes glazed pottery. The steps up are steep but short.
