About Champhai and the Rice Bowl

A town at 1678 metres on the Myanmar edge of the state, sitting above the largest plain of wet paddy in Mizoram, which is why it is called the rice bowl. The fields go gold in late October and November and are best seen from the ridge roads above town. Aizawl to Champhai is 190 km on NH-6 and takes a full day, so plan on two nights. Chapchar Kut in early March is celebrated here as hard as anywhere.
