About Champanagar, ancient Champa

Champa was the capital of Anga, one of the sixteen mahajanapadas, the city of Karna in the Mahabharata and a port the Buddha visited. For Jains, Champapuri is where Vasupujya, the twelfth Tirthankara, was born and attained nirvana, and both Digambara and Shvetambara temples stand at Champanagar in Nathnagar. The ancient mounds are mostly under the modern town; come for the temples and the idea of the place.
