About Vittala Temple, Hampi
The Vittala Temple of the 16th century is the high point of Vijayanagara architecture. Its stone chariot, a shrine to Garuda carved as a ratha with wheels, appears on the fifty rupee note. The maha mantapa has musical pillars that once rang when tapped, now roped off to protect them. The temple is 3 km east of Hampi Bazaar along the river past the Achyutaraya temple and the Kings Balance, and a battery cart runs the last stretch from the parking. The ASI ticket also covers the Zenana Enclosure on the same day.
