About Virupaksha Temple, Hampi

Virupaksha Temple is the only major shrine at Hampi still in daily worship, dedicated to Shiva as Virupaksha, consort of the river goddess Pampa. It predates the empire but was expanded by Krishnadevaraya, whose 50 m tall eastern gopura is the landmark of Hampi Bazaar. Inside are painted ceilings in the ranga mantapa, a pinhole that projects an inverted image of the tower onto a wall, and the temple elephant Lakshmi. Open early morning to evening with a break in the afternoon; shoes come off at the gate.
