About Hampi
Hampi is the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara empire, which ruled most of south India from 1336 to 1565. The ruins spread over about 25 sq km of granite boulders and banana fields along the Tungabhadra, with temples, royal enclosures, markets, elephant stables and water tanks, and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Allow two full days: one for the sacred centre around Virupaksha and Hemakuta, one for the royal centre and the Vittala temple. Hospet, 13 km away, is the rail head and has most hotels.
