About Matanga Hill
Matanga Hill is the highest point in the Hampi ruins and the classic place to watch sunrise, with the Achyutaraya temple below, the Virupaksha gopura to the west and the Tungabhadra to the north. The climb is 20 to 30 minutes on rough rock cut steps from Hampi Bazaar or from the Achyutaraya side, steep in parts. A small Veerabhadra temple sits on top. Start in the dark with a torch and go in a group, and be down before late evening as the ASI asks.
