About Srirangapatna
An island town in the Kaveri that was the capital of Tipu Sultan and fell to the British in the siege of 1799. The Ranganathaswamy temple at its centre dates from the Ganga period and is one of the major Vishnu shrines of the region. Around the fort walls are the Water Gate where Tipu died, Colonel Bailey's dungeon, and outside the fort his summer palace Daria Daulat Bagh with its painted walls and the Gumbaz where he and Hyder Ali are buried. It is 15 km from Mysuru on the Bengaluru highway.
