About Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary

A string of small islets in the Kaveri near Srirangapatna, declared a sanctuary in 1940 on the advice of Salim Ali. Rowing boats take visitors close to nesting painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, open-billed storks and ibises, with marsh crocodiles basking on the rocks. Nesting is heaviest from December to March. Boating stops when the river runs high after heavy releases from the KRS dam upstream, usually in the monsoon.
