About Melukote

A rocky hill town sacred to Sri Vaishnavas, where the philosopher Ramanuja is said to have lived for years. The Cheluvanarayana Swamy temple sits in the town and the Yoganarasimha temple crowns the hill above it, reached by a climb of stone steps. The unfinished Rayagopura and the large stepped Kalyani tank are much used as film locations. The Vairamudi festival in March or April, when the diamond crown is brought from Mandya, draws huge crowds.
