About Sringeri
Sringeri on the Tunga river is the seat of the Sharada Peetham, the first of the four maths founded by Adi Shankara in the 8th century. The Vidyashankara temple beside it, built in the 14th century under the early Vijayanagara rulers, has twelve zodiac pillars arranged so that the sun falls on the pillar of the current month. Pilgrims feed the protected fish at the river ghat and the math serves free meals and runs simple lodging. Navaratri in September or October is the biggest festival, and the town is a base for Agumbe and Kudremukh, each about 40 km away.
