About Shravanabelagola

Shravanabelagola is the most important Jain pilgrimage town in south India, known for the 17 metre monolithic statue of Gomateshwara, or Bahubali, carved on Vindhyagiri hill in 981 CE. About 600 rock cut steps climbed barefoot lead to the statue, so start early or late in the day when the granite is cool. The smaller Chandragiri hill across the tank has a cluster of older basadis and the place where the Maurya emperor Chandragupta is said to have spent his last years. The Mahamastakabhisheka head anointing ceremony is held once every 12 years, last in 2018.
