About Halebidu Hoysaleswara Temple

Hoysaleswara is a 12th century twin Shiva temple at Halebidu, the old Hoysala capital of Dwarasamudra, built under king Vishnuvardhana. Its outer walls carry some of the densest carving in India, with bands of stories from the epics, dancers, musicians and two large Nandi pavilions facing the shrines. It became part of the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas World Heritage site in 2023. The temple is free to enter and is set in a lawn beside a tank; the small ASI museum on the grounds and the Kedareshwara temple and Jain basadis a short walk away are worth the extra hour.
