About Belur Chennakeshava Temple
The Chennakeshava temple at Belur was begun in 1117 by the Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana and took over a century to finish. It is famous for the 42 madanika bracket figures under the eaves, the lathe turned pillars inside and the friezes of elephants, lions and horses running around the base. Along with Halebidu and Somanathapura it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2023 under Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas. The temple is still in worship and opens from morning to evening; Belur is 38 km from Hassan and the Halebidu temple is 16 km further.
