About Saurath Sabha
For centuries Maithil Brahmin families have gathered under the mango trees of Saurath each June or July to arrange marriages, checking the panji genealogical registers kept by the panjikars to make sure the couple are not related. Tradition credits its founding to Raja Harisimhadeva in the fourteenth century. The gathering has shrunk to a few hundred people, but it still happens, and in season it is one of the odder things to watch in Bihar.
