About Sakrebailu Elephant Camp
Sakrebailu is a forest department elephant camp on the Tunga river at Gajanur, 14 km from Shivamogga on the Thirthahalli road. The elephants, many of them once used for timber work, are brought to the river each morning to be scrubbed and fed, and visitors can watch from close by between about 8.30 and 11 am. There is nothing to see later in the day when the animals return to the forest. The Gajanur dam and the Tyavarekoppa lion and tiger safari on the other side of town are commonly added to make a half day outing.
