About Konark Sun Temple

A thirteenth century temple built as a giant chariot of the Sun god, with twelve pairs of carved wheels and seven stone horses, commissioned by Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. The wheels work as sundials. The main tower fell long ago, but the dance hall, the gateway and the erotic and everyday carvings are still there. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and sits 35 km from Puri; the Konark Dance Festival is held here in early December.
