About Jumma Masjid, Vijayapura
Built by Ali Adil Shah I after the battle of Talikota in 1565, this is one of the largest mosques of the Deccan, with a hall of arches that could hold thousands of worshippers. The mihrab is gilded and painted with Quranic verses, and the prayer floor is marked into individual squares added under Aurangzeb. The mosque is in daily use, so visitors should dress modestly, remove shoes and avoid Friday afternoon. It is about 2 km from Gol Gumbaz.
