About Gang Canal

Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner paid for a canal from the Sutlej at Ferozepur, 129 km across Punjab and into his desert, and Lord Irwin opened it on 26 October 1927 at Shivpur Head just outside what became Sri Ganganagar. It turned sand into wheat and kinnow country, and the town is named for him. There is no monument as such; the headworks at Shivpur, the tree-lined main canal and the gridded colony town are the thing to see.
