About Gandhi Sangrahalaya, Motihari

Gandhi arrived in Motihari on 15 April 1917 and was served notice to leave the district the next day at the village of Chandrahiya; he refused, and the Champaran satyagraha began. The museum holds photographs, documents and the story of the tinkathia indigo system, and the 48-foot memorial pillar beside it, designed by Nandalal Bose, marks where he stood trial. Chandrahiya, ten kilometres out on the Kesaria road, has its own small pillar.
