About Ellora Caves

Thirty-four caves cut into a basalt escarpment between the 6th and 10th centuries, representing Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism side by side. Cave 16, the Kailasa temple, was carved top-down out of a single rock, roughly 200,000 tonnes of stone removed to leave a full temple standing free.
