About Ajanta Caves

Thirty caves in a horseshoe gorge above the Waghora river, cut in two phases from the 2nd century BCE. They are famous for their murals, the finest surviving ancient painting in India, showing Jataka tales in extraordinary detail. Lost to the forest for centuries until a British hunting party stumbled on them in 1819.
