About Chirand

A mound on the old bank of the Ghaghra near its meeting with the Ganga, eleven kilometres east of Chhapra, where excavations from the 1960s found an unbroken sequence from a Neolithic village of about 2500 BCE, with bone tools and rice, through the Chalcolithic and up to the Pala period. It is one of the most important prehistoric sites in the Ganga plain, and on the ground it is a mound with a Shiva temple on top and a village around it.
