About Bhikhari Thakur's Kutubpur

Bhikhari Thakur, born here in 1887, was a barber who built Bhojpuri folk theatre almost single-handed, with plays like Bidesiya about the men who left these villages for Calcutta and the women who waited. The village on the Ganga diyara has a memorial and a statue, and the state has promised a proper museum for years. There is little to see; there is a lot to know, and Bhojpuri theatre people treat the place as their Stratford.
