About Badami Cave Temples
Four rock-cut cave temples from the 6th and 7th century Chalukya capital of Vatapi are carved into a red sandstone cliff above the green Agastya lake. Cave 3, dedicated to Vishnu, has the finest sculpture including the giant Trivikrama and Narasimha panels. Across the lake are the Bhutanatha temples and the north fort, which needs a steep 20 minute climb. Badami is 35 km from Bagalkot and is the base for Aihole and Pattadakal; the red cliffs are also a well-known rock climbing spot.
