About Atapaka Bird Sanctuary
Atapaka on the south east edge of Kolleru lake, 2 km from Kaikaluru, is the easiest place to see the lake birds up close. The forest department has built watchtowers, a walkway and an interpretation centre, and thousands of grey pelicans and painted storks nest on the trees and platforms in the water from October to March. Boats take visitors out into the reeds. Early morning is best; Kaikaluru is on the Vijayawada to Bhimavaram rail line.
