About Allahabad Fort
Akbar built the fort in 1583 on the point above the Sangam and it is the largest he built. The Army holds most of it, so visitors see only the Patalpuri underground temple and the Akshayavat, the undying banyan that Hiuen Tsang wrote about in the 7th century. The Ashokan pillar inside, moved from Kaushambi, is not on the open route. The walls are best seen from a boat.
What to see and do
- Patalpuri underground temple
- The Akshayavat banyan
- The walls from the river
- Ashokan pillar, seen from outside only
