About Tal Chhapar Sanctuary
Seven square kilometres of flat saline grassland, an old hunting ground of the Bikaner rajas, holding one of the densest blackbuck populations anywhere, over two thousand animals in the open where you can see them all. From September the sky fills with harriers, Montagu's and pallid, roosting in the grass in hundreds, and demoiselle cranes and raptors follow. Open all year, but the winter months are the point.
