About Sujata Stupa, Bakraur
Across the Niranjana river from Bodh Gaya, in the village of Bakraur, a wide brick stupa marks the house of Sujata, the village girl who fed the starving Siddhartha a bowl of kheer and turned him from extreme austerity towards the middle way. The core is 2nd century BCE with later Gupta and Pala additions, and ASI excavated it in the 1970s. Walk or cycle over the bridge; the fields and the village are the point as much as the mound.
