About Great Buddha Statue
An 80-foot seated Buddha in meditation, unveiled by the Dalai Lama in 1989 after seven years of work by the Japanese Daijokyo sect. It is sandstone and red granite, hollow, and said to have 20,000 bronze Buddhas sealed inside. Ten smaller statues of his disciples stand in a row on either side. It is a fifteen-minute walk from the Mahabodhi Temple and the garden around it is a calm place to sit.
