About Somanathapura Keshava Temple
A Hoysala temple built in 1268 by Somanatha, a commander under king Narasimha III, and one of the three Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas inscribed as World Heritage in 2023. Three shrines stand on a star shaped platform inside a walled courtyard, every outer wall covered in bands of carved elephants, horses, epics and gods in soapstone. No worship takes place since the idols were damaged centuries ago, so it is visited as a monument. It is about 35 km from Mysuru on the Bannur road.
